A Satisfying Birth Experience
What exactly entails a "satisfying" birth? I believe that a
satisfying birth can mean many things to many people. It could
be a completely natural, un-medicated birth to one woman, or a
quiet, pain-controlled labor with an epidural for another. A
woman may want a combination of various comfort measures
with a doula, along with the option of medication on standby.
The main idea is that the experience is created by decisions
and input by the mother and father, not controlled by the
hospital or healthcare provider. My job, along with the
pregnancy team of your childbirth educator and your healthcare
provider, is to give you all of the information you need to make
informed choices.
You are who defines a "satisfying birth."

What is a doula?
She is one of the best resources a mother can have during
labor. She understands the labor process and is well equipped
with knowledge and techniques to guide a woman through
childbirth. She may use massage, imagery, breathing
techniques, music, position changes, or just a calming voice and
a comforting hand to help mom reach her ultimate reward -- a
beautiful baby!
Possibly the best attribute of a doula is her continuous
presence throughout labor...she will be there from beginning to
end, unlike medical staff that goes through shift changes. A
doula is a familiar face who knows mom's needs and wants and
protects her birth choices.

What about dad?
It is a popular misconception that doulas replace dads in the
delivery room. This is far from true! With a doula present, dad is
able to participate however he feels most comfortable. A doula
can make suggestions for dad, provide informational support
and answer questions, explain options, and let dad get a break
and a snack if needed. I have found in every birth that dad was
very relieved and appreciative to have a doula present.
